John "Jack" Edward Simmons

John "Jack" Edward Simmons, a devoted husband, beloved father, cherished grandfather, and courageous Navy veteran, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2026, in Essex, Maryland. Born on February 16, 1941, in Baltimore, Maryland, John’s life spanned over 85 years, during which he exhibited unwavering dedication to his family, community, and country.

John’s journey began in the heart of Baltimore, where he was born to Wallace and Elsie Simmons. Though they have since passed, the values instilled in him by his parents shaped the honorable man he became—a man whose strength of character and sense of duty would leave a lasting imprint on all who knew him.

His service to his country was marked by bravery and honor as a Navy veteran who served during the Vietnam War, a testament to his courage and commitment in the face of adversity. Following his military service, John answered another call to serve his community, dedicating 33 years of his life as a policeman for the Baltimore City Police Department. As a valued member of the K-9 unit, he forged a unique bond with his canine partners, embodying loyalty, courage, and an unwavering passion to protect the people of Baltimore.

John’s professional life was defined by these qualities, but it was within the warmth of his family that his true heart was revealed. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Phyllis Simmons, whose partnership provided him with steadfast support and companionship through life’s many chapters. Together, they raised two devoted children: Todd Simmons (Vicki Majewski Simmons), who carries forward his legacy with pride and affection; and Victoria Simmons, whose love for her father was a wellspring of strength for both. John was blessed to have his grandson Dylan Gover, and bonus great-grandchildren Adalyn and Colson Herron, and Logan and Charlotte Strain. He is survived by his sister Elsie Mehrl White, and sister in law Charlotte Hopkins (the late Dennis Hopkins). John found incredible joy spending time with his granddogs Diesel, Harper Jean, and Skylar. Also survived by a host of other loving family members and friends.

In remembering John Edward Simmons, one recalls a man who dedicated his life not just to his profession, but to upholding the values of loyalty, courage, and family. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, yet his legacy as a Navy veteran, a steadfast K-9 officer, and a devoted family man will endure in the stories and memories he leaves behind.

May the family find comfort in the legacy of a life well-lived, and may John’s spirit rest in the peace he so richly deserves. His journey on this earth may have ended, but the love he shared will forever live on in Baltimore, Essex, and in the hearts of all who knew him.
