Obituary

Betty Jean Cogar

November 29, 1932 - March 11, 2023

On March 11, 2023, Betty Jean Cogar passed away. Beloved wife of the late Garnet Cogar; devoted mother of David Cogar and his wife Jackie Cogar, Steve Cogar and his wife Jean Cogar, and the late Eugene Cogar; loving daughter of the late Garber and Evelyn Bright. Betty was preceded in death by her sisters Edith, Dorothy, Wanda, Carole, Helen, and Eleanor. She is survived by four grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. Betty made so many friends that anywhere she went someone knew her.

Betty was born and raised in West Virginia. She moved to Baltimore at age 18 and met her husband of 55 years. He passed in 2006. She worked for the Board of Education of Baltimore County in the cafeteria for most of her life. Amazingly, she also worked part time for the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks up until February of 2023.

In 1973, Betty and Garnet began a musical ministry program consisting of bluegrass and gospel music. Every third Saturday and Sunday of the month, musical groups would donate their time to the Victory Villa Community Center program. Free admission was offered to those attending. Her delicious chili dogs and baked goods were always available.

Along with her strong Christian faith, Betty sang with the New Sounds of Victory gospel group. Always serving the community, Betty and the group would play at senior apartments, nursing homes and churches.

Betty stayed active for 50 years running the two musical programs. She never missed a bluegrass program. In her 50 years of service, Betty has blessed so many people with her generosity, musical talent and programs. Words cannot express how much she will be missed, remembered and always loved!
