Philip Franklin Pownell, Sr., age 82 years, a resident of Elkins, WV departed this life Tuesday evening, September 1, 2015 at the Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown, WV under the care of Hospice Care Corporation. He had been in declining health.

He was born Thursday, August 3, 1933 at Fairmont, WV a son of the late Charles Darwin Pownell and Mamie Ruth Hansford Pownell Morrison.  On April 10, 1955 at Kerens, WV he was married to Inez Nelda Kalar, who preceded him in death August 5, 2004.  Surviving are his companion, Mary Johanna Nelson of Elkins; one son, Philip Franklin “Frank” Pownell, Jr. and wife Juanita “Wendy” of Street, MD; one daughter, Teresa McKissack and husband William “Bill” of Boiling Springs, PA; one sister, Frances “Jean” Hinkel of Baltimore, MD; one brother, Terrill L. “Terry” Morrison and wife Wanda of Wilmington, NC; three grandchildren, Patrick Pownell and wife Emily, Courtney Steininger and husband Chip, and Corey Pownell and wife Deanna; and three great grandchildren, Mackenna and Nathan Steininger, and Madelyn Pownell; and great nephew, E. J. “Eric” Nelson, Jr.

Preceding him in death are his stepfather, Carlton “Jack” Morrison; three brothers, Charles A. Pownell, Robert Allen “Bob” Pownell, Sr., and Jerry Dale Morrison.

He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the Class of 1951, and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving with the U. S. Navy.  He was an Electrician having worked for Western Electric for thirty years, retiring in December of 1996 and later at the Social Security Administration at Baltimore.  He was a member of the Middle River Baptist Church in MD, where he was an active volunteer in the food ministry and currently attended Landmark Baptist Church at Elkins.  He was a member of the Jepthah Lodge # 222, A. F. & A. M., the Scottish Rite of Baltimore, enjoyed fishing, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and was an avid reader.  He really enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 7 PM, Saturday.  On Saturday, September 5, 2015 at 7 PM, a Memorial Service will be held with the Rev. Don Hepler officiating.  Mr. Pownell will then be moved to the Bruzdzinski Funeral Home at Baltimore, MD where friends may call on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 from 11AM to 1 PM.  Funeral Services will be conducted at the funeral home Tuesday, at 1 PM.  The Rev. James Davenport will officiate and interment will follow at the Holly Hill Memorial Gardens at Middle River, MD.  The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Philip Franklin Pownell, Sr.  Condolences may be expressed to the family at; www.lohrbarbfuneralhome.com
